Best SEO Tools for Local Service Businesses
Most local SEO tool lists rank software by feature count. That's backwards for a contractor or service business. You have a few jobs that matter: showing up in the map pack across your service area, keeping your listings right, getting more reviews and fixing your site. Here are the tools we'd use for each job, with a free option and a paid upgrade, and prices checked on each vendor's site.
How we judged them
Each tool was checked on its own website in October 2026 and had to meet these tests.
Does a local SEO job
A clear local module: rank grid, citations, reviews, Google Business Profile, audits or keyword research.
Small-business pricing
Priced for a small business, or with a free tier or trial.
Published pricing
Prices and features stated on the vendor's own site, dated October 2026. Quote-only tools are mentioned, not recommended.
Grouped by job
Sorted by the job a contractor needs done, not by feature count.
First-hand use stated
Where we use a tool ourselves we say so; otherwise we describe what the vendor states.
Reviewed by hand, 20261019. Nobody pays for a place on this list.
The short answer
- Map-pack rank tracking: Local Falcon for grid scans; BrightLocal if you also want citations and reviews in one login.
- Citations and listings: Whitespark’s Local Citation Finder to find and fix them; Moz Local to push and monitor them.
- Reviews: NiceJob or Whitespark Reputation Builder to ask every customer, automatically.
- Google Business Profile: the profile itself is free; GMB Everywhere shows you your competitors’ categories.
- Audits, speed, keywords, links: Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights, Search Console, Keyword Planner and Ahrefs’ free tier cover most of it for $0.
All prices below are as of October 2026, taken from each vendor’s own pricing page. Vendors change plans often, so check the link before you buy.
Why these jobs
We grouped the tools around the jobs that matter for a local service business, and our construction study shows why those jobs come first. We analyzed 100 local searches across 25 US metros and four contractor types, 1,034 contractor websites (965 crawled) and 457 Google Business Profiles, October 2026.
- Reviews: map-pack businesses have more reviews: a median of 49.5 reviews for positions 1-3 vs 36 for positions 4-7. That’s a correlation, not proof that reviews alone move you, but it’s the clearest gap we measured.
- Map-pack rank: map pack and organic results are mostly different businesses: only 29% of map-pack contractors with a website also rank on page one organically for the same search. Your organic rank tells you little about your map rank, so you need to track the map separately.
- Directories: the directories contractors compete with most often on page one are houzz.com (66), yelp.com (65), bbb.org (17), homeadvisor.com (13), procore.com (12), thumbtack.com (12), clearlyrated.com (9) and newhomesource.com (8). If you can’t outrank them, you want to be listed on them, correctly.
The study covered contractors, but the jobs are the same for a plumber, an HVAC company or a roofer.
How we picked
Every tool here had to pass three tests. It does a specific local SEO job: rank grids, citations, reviews, Google Business Profile, audits or keyword research. It’s priced for a small business, or has a free tier. And its pricing and features are published on its own site, which we checked in October 2026.
Where we use a tool ourselves, we say so. We used Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights and Semrush to build the construction study above. For the rest, we describe what the vendor’s own site says it does and what it costs. We don’t take affiliate commissions on anything here.
We left out website builders, AI writers and enterprise listing networks priced for brands with hundreds of locations. They’re useful to someone, just not to a 12-person contractor.

Map-pack rank tracking
A normal rank tracker checks your position from one point. That’s fine for organic results, but the map pack changes block by block. A contractor can be first in the map pack at the shop and nowhere five miles out, where half the jobs are. Grid trackers drop a pin at points across a map and check your rank from each one, so you see the whole service area.
Local Falcon
Local Falcon is built around the grid. You pick a keyword and a grid size (from 3×3 up to 21×21), and it shows your rank at every pin. It now also reports visibility in AI answers. Pricing runs on credits: one credit is one map pin, so a 5×5 scan costs 25 credits. Starter is $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits, or $299.88 a year for 90,000, and you get 100 free credits when you sign up (as of October 2026). Monthly credits expire at month end; pay-as-you-go credits are $0.05 each and don’t.
Best for: an owner or marketer who wants to see the real shape of their map coverage and run a scan every few weeks. A 7×7 grid on five keywords once a month is 245 credits, well inside Starter.
BrightLocal
BrightLocal splits into three plans: Track (rankings and geo-grid), Manage (listings and citations) and Grow (reviews). Track for one location is $41 a month, or $369 a year, and covers up to 100 keywords and four competitors, with grid tracking for up to five keywords. Manage is $54 a month and Grow $65 a month for one location (as of October 2026). There’s a 14-day free trial with no card.
Best for: a business that wants rankings, listings and reviews in one place, or an agency running several locations. If you only need the grid, Local Falcon is cheaper. Whitespark’s Local Rank Tracker is another option at $17 a month for 100 keywords, with grids sold separately.
Citations and listings
A citation is any listing of your business name, address and phone number: Yelp, BBB, Houzz, Angi, the chamber of commerce. For contractors these matter twice. They help Google trust your details, and as the A3 numbers above show, the directories themselves take a big share of page one. A correct Houzz or BBB profile is a second way to be found for the same search.
Whitespark Local Citation Finder
Whitespark’s Local Citation Finder finds the directories and citation sources you should be listed on. The free Starter plan gives you one campaign and three searches a day, which is enough to run a first audit. The Small Business plan is $39 a month, or $33 a month billed annually, with five campaigns and 20 searches a day (as of October 2026).
Best for: finding the trade and local directories that matter in your market, not just the national ones everyone has.
Moz Local
Moz Local pushes your details to its directory network (Moz lists 90+ directories) and keeps watching them. Lite is $20 a month, or $16 a month billed yearly; Preferred is $30 and Elite $40 billed monthly (as of October 2026). Lite monitors reviews but doesn’t let you reply to them; that starts at Preferred. The pricing page doesn’t state a free trial for Moz Local.
Best for: a business that has moved, changed its phone number or rebranded, and needs old details cleaned up everywhere.
BrightLocal Citation Builder
If you’d rather pay per listing than per month, BrightLocal’s Citation Builder is pay-as-you-go, starting at $2 a citation with bulk credits (as of October 2026). It suits a one-time cleanup better than an ongoing subscription.
Reviews
Most service businesses get reviews the same way: they remember to ask some customers some of the time. A review tool makes the ask automatic, by text or email, after every job. In our study, the median map-pack contractor had 49.5 reviews against 36 just below the pack, and star rating didn’t separate them at all: the median was 4.8 in both groups. Volume is the gap. Our study of contractor reviews goes deeper on the numbers.
NiceJob
NiceJob sends review requests by text and email and gives you review widgets for your site. Starter is $75 a month; Pro is $125 a month and adds referrals, rebooking reminders and AI review replies (as of October 2026). There’s a 14-day free trial and no contract.
Best for: home service businesses that finish jobs every week and want requests to go out without anyone remembering.
Whitespark Reputation Builder
Reputation Builder does review requests and private feedback, and monitors reviews on 10 sites. PRO is $79 per location, per month, with 3,000 email requests and 300 SMS credits a month (as of October 2026). There’s a 14-day trial.
Larger platforms such as Birdeye do this too, but Birdeye doesn’t publish prices; you fill in a form for a quote. For a single-location business we’d start with one of the two above.
Google Business Profile management
Google Business Profile
The most important local SEO tool is free. Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business is free. Fill in every field, choose the right primary category, add real job photos, reply to reviews and post updates. In our study, 28% of map-pack businesses had posted in the last 30 days vs 19% at positions 4-20. That’s a correlation, but posting costs nothing.
GMB Everywhere and GMBspy
Your category choices matter, and two Chrome extensions show you the full category list, secondary categories included, that competing businesses chose. GMB Everywhere (listed in the Chrome store as “GMB Everywhere – GBP Audit for Local SEO”) displays primary and secondary categories beside each profile on Google Maps and says competitor categories are always free to view. It also runs profile, review and post audits; the free plan allows five views a month of those, and Power User is $30 a month, or $15 a month billed annually (as of October 2026). GMBspy can export the names and primary and secondary categories of the top 20 listings for a search to a CSV.
Best for: checking which categories the businesses beating you have chosen before you change yours.
Semrush Local
Semrush Local manages your profile, tracks map rank on a grid and drafts review replies. Base is $30 per location, per month and Pro is $60, both shown as billed annually; Pro adds listing management and review requests (as of October 2026). It can be bought on its own or added to a Semrush subscription. We use Semrush itself; it’s the right add-on if you already pay for it, and more than you need if you don’t.
Site audits and speed
Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Screaming Frog crawls your site the way a search engine does and lists every page with a missing title, missing H1, duplicate meta description or broken link. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers almost every local service site. A licence is $279 a year (as of October 2026). We used it to crawl the 965 contractor sites in our study. It found that on-page basics are often missing: 41% of sites lack a meta description on a quarter or more of their pages, 23% lack an H1 on a quarter or more, and 8% duplicate titles on a quarter or more.
PageSpeed Insights
PageSpeed Insights is Google’s speed test. Paste a URL and it runs Lighthouse on mobile and desktop, and shows real-user Core Web Vitals when your site has enough traffic. We ran it on every contractor homepage in the study: the median mobile score was 55/100 and only 4% scored 90+. Most sites are too small for real-user data: only 16% had Core Web Vitals data. Run it on your homepage and your main service page, on mobile, and fix the biggest item first. Our technical SEO guide walks through the usual fixes.
Keywords and links
Google Search Console
Search Console is a free Google service that shows which queries bring people to your site, with impressions, clicks and position on Google Search. For a local business it’s the best keyword tool you have, because it’s your data, not an estimate. Look for searches where you sit in positions 8-20: those pages are close and usually need a better title or more detail.
Google Keyword Planner
Keyword Planner is free inside Google Ads. You need a Google Ads account, and Google’s help pages say you’ll need to enter billing information to use the keyword ideas feature. Google also notes its volumes are rounded. Use it to compare terms (“general contractor” vs “home remodeling”) in your city, not to forecast exact traffic.
Ahrefs Free
Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives you a site audit, your backlinks and the keywords your pages rank for, on sites you verify you own, with 5,000 crawl credits per project per month (as of October 2026). That’s enough to see who links to you and spot broken pages.
Semrush
When you outgrow the free tools, Semrush covers competitor keywords, backlinks and rank tracking in one place. It has a free plan limited to 10 reports a day; the first paid plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed annually, with 500 keywords tracked daily (as of October 2026). We use it for keyword and traffic research, including the traffic estimates in our construction study.
A free stack for a small contractor
If you’re a one- or two-crew business with no marketing budget, this covers the basics for $0:
- Google Business Profile for the listing, posts, photos and review replies.
- Google Search Console for what you rank for and which pages get clicks.
- PageSpeed Insights for mobile speed.
- Screaming Frog’s free version for missing titles, H1s and broken links.
- Whitespark Local Citation Finder’s free plan for a first citation audit.
- GMB Everywhere’s free plan for competitor categories.
- Local Falcon’s 100 sign-up credits for one grid scan, so you know where you stand in the map pack.
The first paid tool worth adding is usually a review request tool, because it does work you’d otherwise forget. After that, a monthly grid tracker. Our local SEO checklist puts the tasks in order, and the construction local SEO guide explains each one.

FAQs
What is the best local SEO tool?
There isn’t one. Pick by job: a grid tracker for map rank, a citation tool for listings, a review tool for reviews. If you want one login for all three, BrightLocal is the closest to an all-in-one at small-business prices.
Are there free local SEO tools?
Yes. Google Business Profile, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights cost nothing, and Screaming Frog, Whitespark’s Citation Finder, GMB Everywhere and Ahrefs all have free tiers. The free stack above covers most of what a small business needs.
Do I need a local rank tracker?
If you care about the map pack, yes. Only 29% of map-pack contractors with a website also rank on page one organically for the same search, so a normal rank tracker can miss the results that send you calls. A grid tracker shows how your map rank changes across your service area.
